A rise in violence has seen more than 350 Avon and Somerset police officers trained to use a Taser in the past year.

The Constabulary decided to offer their officers extra protection, with 379 officers now fully equipped to use the weapon.

Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “In the past week alone, there have been 19 assaults on our police officers.

“There’s a lot of misinformation about Tasers and we understand that much of this comes from a lack of knowledge about the circumstances of why, when and where we may use it.

“Often just the sight of a Taser is enough to calm down an individual, quell their violence and diffuse a dangerous situation.”

Body cameras are now worn by frontline officers to ensure the use of Taser is correctly recorded.

Each occasion is closely scrutinised to ensure that the use is appropriate.
