A 22-year-old man clad in motocross body armour and brandishing a sword was Tasered by Durham Regional Police in Oshawa early Wednesday morning.

Police were called to Huron St. near Eulalie Ave. after witnesses reported seeing the man waving a long sword around 3:15 a.m.

According to a media release, the suspect raised the sword when police approached him, so they drew guns to make an arrest. The suspect dropped the sword, but police said he appeared to be reaching for something under his motocross gear. An officer then Tasered him.

Police said the male was not fully affected by the Taser, but it did enable the other officers to arrest him.

Jourdon Pope, 22, of Minto Court in Oshawa, has been charged with assault to resist arrest, possession of a dangerous weapon and carrying a concealed weapon. He was held for a bail hearing.
