USA – Yuma, Arizona Deputies User Taser-Equipped Robot for Arrest (2012-04-13)

[[SUMMARY / COMMENT : In a brief report with many questions unanswered, Associated Press makes it appear that a robot equipped with a Taser stun gun to disable a gun-wielding man who wouldn’t surrender. How the taser was able to shock and disable remains unclear. This will surely be used to justify increased robot-use of tasers in stand-offs with dangerous suspects.]]

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) – Yuma County sheriff’s deputies used a robot equipped with a Taser stun gun to disable a gun-wielding man who wouldn’t surrender.

Capt. Eben Bratcher says the standoff began late Thursday morning when a woman called and said her husband had threatened her with a gun. The first deputy who arrived saw 78-year-old John Daubert go into a backyard shed with a gun. He ordered Daubert to come out but instead he put the gun to his head.

Bratcher says a sheriff’s SWAT team ended up sending in their robot, which has a camera, pepper spray and a Taser. A deputy controlling the robot used the Taser to shock and disable Daubert.

Bratcher says the robot kept deputies from being put in harm’s way and might have saved Daubert as well.
